My car has 118,000 miles and I just replaced mine yesterday. My lights were doing this weird normal/dimming/normal/dimming thing while I drove...regardless of rpm or load. After 4 weeks of that...my little battery idiot light came on. Took it in...they tested it...yep...bad.
FYI...I actually have a dealer that I trust. Versendaal Lincoln/Mercury in Holland here. Called them up...$160 labor to replace it. Considering all I've read about what a PITA it is...I went for it. I also got a Motorcraft alternator..so in the future if I had any problems...I'd just go right back to them.
And another FYI...every nut/bolt they removed was rusted like mad. For a 3 hour quote...it took them 6 hours. Plus they gave me a lender to drive. So basically..they didn't get much profit off me.

What was your total bill for the new alt. from a dealer??? $600.00 ???? three hours labor and the retail price of a ford alternator that might do it.... Even places like auto zone want $250 for a bosh alt.. and they are a discount store...

Total bill was $450 with tax (MI 6%) which was $30 for a new belt, $185 for a new alternator, and $200 labor. They found my pinch bolt on my strut missing the nut (oops...fast install) so they also padded their pockets for some cash to replace that as it was a safety issue. But the big thing is...if it goes bad again..I go right back there for work. Not in my driveway again...

Can you get some voltage readings at the battery, with a multimeter when your lights are dimming?
Also, make sure the battery cables are clean and tight.

I wouldn't change the alternator unless you know it's bad.
Take a battery measurement with the engine & accessories off (should be about 12.5 VDC). Take another battery reading with just the engine running (should be about 14.5 VDC), and then take one when you experience the dimming (should still be above 14 VDC).

Drop in to an auto parts store - Napa, Auto Zone, Advance/Discount, and they will be happy to check your charging system for you, so you will know if its the alternator or battery.
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.
