I've never gotten a speeding ticket, and I'd like to keep it that way, especially when I take delivery of my new BMW.

So now I'm in the market for a good radar detector. I've heard about the new "POP radar" burst guns that are on and off too quickly for most detectors to find. To get POP detection, it seems that I'll need a high-end unit, so don't worry about cost when offering your advice. What are your opinions?

Best one you can buy is Valentine 1. The engineer worked for Escort and thought he could build a better one so he left there and started his own. They cost $399.

#2 spot goes to the Passport 8500 by Escort.

These are the top of the line units. Someday I hope to own a V1.

I agree, though I have never tested the Valentine 1. I have the Escort 8500 and it is great. I didn't get the Valentine because it is freakin huge and only has a better Ka range (at least it did when I was shopping for radar detectors about a year ago). If it was me I wouldn't spend the extra $100 for the Valentine because the Escort has saved me enough times with the awesome range it has. But if you have to have the best of the best (and want a freakin huge unit) then buy the Valentine 1, I've only heard good things about them.

Oh, by the way, both units track X, K, Ka, and Laser. I don't know about the new POP radar guns but most cops use guns that turn on and off quickly (they usually don't use always on). The Escort has been great at detecting these (at least a mile away) and I'm sure the Valentine would do just as good. Go ahead and spend the $300 to $400 for an Escort 8500 or Valentine 1, you won't regret it.

The current Motor Trend just rated them.

Sounds like POP is a rare bird to begin with and the "POP" mode isn't even supposed to be used for ticketing purposes.

As far as detectors go, my $85 BEL 910 Express does just fine.

I'm happy with my $90 Cobra.

Motor trend rated the Passport over the Valentine. I wonder how long before Mike starts trash talking against motor trend. He hates to lose.

Wow Sidewinder, back from the dead! Drop me a PM sometime so we can have lunch or at least a beer man. I've got the V1 and love it. The 8500 is supposed to be just as good =, but either way I don't think you can go wrong. FYI, most cops in Iowa aren't using instant on. Watch out for Missouri and Minnesota though. Usually you'll get a warning of a few beeps when they hit someone a mile or so away and then nothing until they hit you and it's too late. Basically, nothing but diligence or a lighter right foot will save you from instant on.

Since nobody else asked, what type of BMW?

Actually, the Escort is bigger than V1. The V1 may be wider, but the Escort has it on length and overall size.

Valentine 1: 4.5" L x 3.6" W x 1.0" H = 16.20 in^3
Passport 8500: 5.32" L x 2.85 W x 1.25 H = 18.95 in^3
