I have a 96 Contour 2.0L Zetec. When I am stopped at a red light with the car in drive or in 1st or in 2nd or if I put it in Reverse, it idles really really ruff. It doesn't do it when it is in nuetral or park. What could the problem be??Please help.

IAC valve that is dirty or needs replacing or a simple vaccuum leak somewhere.
IAC valve isn't fun to replace on the Zetec, but it's doable. Part is about $100 retail but as cheap as less than $60 online.

The Idle Air Control can stick almost closed and starve the engine for air. It is mounted below the intake manifold. The engine can idle low and rough for other reasons. - Stretched timing belt
- Poor plug and plug wire condition
- Low fuel pressure
- Dirty injectors
- Vacuum or intake plenum air leaks
- EGR leakage
Take your pick. Check for trouble codes first, even if you have not noticed the CEL come on. As we say - Autozone will check them free. Just remember to write the the exact number down, if any.

I went to a few shops and they all told me that all Contours idle rough. Mine wheel shakes and [censored], thinking about cleaning MAF, if we ever gets highs above 15 around here.
MAF is cheapest thing to do, get some NON-residue eletric cleaner from Radio Shack.
By the way I called for you $69.99 IAC vavle, at Pep Boys.

New spark plugs/wires ( expensive type), air filter, fuel filter, O2 sensor, flushed injectors out. Helped a slight bit after the injector cleaning last week.

have you tried to reset the computer after changing all that?
