The charging system light flickers when my V6 engine is above 4500 RPM. This occures even when there is minimal electrical load. The belt is tight and looks OK. The belt tensioner has plenty of travel available even if the belt were to stretch quite a bit. Otherwise the charging system seems fine. Could this be a false alarm (I hope)? The belt is probably original equip (54000 miles).

Have your charging system analyzed.

Either the alternator or the battery is weak, or there is a wiring fault that is preventing full charge current.

this is a classic symptom of a bad alternator. The commutator gets rough and kicks the brushes back at high rpm.

Yap. I had the same symptoms. New alternator fixed it.

Thanks for the info on my problem! I checked my Chilton manual for alternator replacement, and it says the right half-shaft must be removed before the alternator can be removed from my V6 engine!! This looks like a lot of work so I'm wondering if anyone has changed an alternator on a V6 without removing the right half-shaft. The stealer says 2.5 hrs labor to change an alternator on a V6, and 1 hr on 4 bangers. I haven't crawled under my car to check clearances yet because its 17 degrees F and I have no garage!
