I've only noticed this twice last month. Both times it's happened it's been about 20 degrees out and the car has been sitting for 3-5 hours. Thought it was a belt squeak but the sound is coming from the driver's side of the engine (in the valley between the engine and the battery). Both times the noise went away after 2-3 minutes. Any ideas?
The car is a '98 Mystique LS with 65K on the odo.
Thanks, Dave

V6 right?
The waterpump belt is on the drivers side. In the Vee of the engine by the battery. If you remove that front plastic engine cover, you'll see it.

Welcome to my hell. I have had this problem for months. It is the waterpump drive belt. I replaced the belt and it still does it. I cleaned the pulleys and it still does it. I think my next shot is going to be a gatorback belt. Other than that, I'm lost and have to deal with my "laser gun custom sounds" until Summer comes back.

Just a thought, but if you put just a dab (a very small drop) of petroleum jelly on the pulley itself (the shiny part that the belt comes in contact with) that it will raise the coefficient of friction enough that the squeal might stop.
It sounds like it's a dry squeal. The pulley actually spinning faster than the belt is moving and the contact point making a squealing sound. A small (very tiny, like 1/2 a tic tac sized dollop) on the shiny pulley surface smoothed out to cover as much as possible should cause the belt to grab against the pulley and stop the squeal (for the short term) Not so much that you just greased it and it stops the belt altogether.

Does the waterpump, the tensioner pulley turn freely? And does the tensioner/pulley piviot freely. Try a little PB Blaster on the rusty piviot point.
Mine was sticking when first new and after the first winter. I used Super lube. The piviot probalbly not allowing the spring to apply enough tension.

I have actually heard that the starter durring cold starts continues to turn over already after the car has started and that is where the squeel comes from - just my $.02 - JOE
