I mean really free, they all seem to advertise a free report, yet end up asking for payment somehow.

This is legit! Go to SlickDeal.net at http://www.slickdeals.net/?site=slickdeals
On posting Saturday 12/27/03, click on Free Equifax Credit Report + Fico Score from Household Bank. You'll be taken directly to Equifax's website for the report. Follow the instructions as you have to complete a three question survey and enter your information to obtain the report. It's secure. I received my FICO score and printed out a genuine, complete EQUIFAX report today!

I would recommend pony'ing up the $40 and getting all 3 major reports (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion). There is nothing like being armed with the knowledge of your credit score when it is time to negotiate an APR or Interest Rate on a mortgage or car loan.

Thanks!

I ran mine, and it listed a $2200 balance on a card.. I know all my cards have 0 balance, so I was racking my brain trying to figure out where they got that from. I looked closer, and saw that it's a card of my mom's that I'm an authorized user on. Whew.

You shouldn't have to pay $40 for it... regular price is $9 apiece, and most states are less.

If you had any adverse action due to credit in the last 90 days, you are entitled to a free report from each of the agencies.

Besides, if you do get the off-brand ones, and they're wrong, you'll still need to get ones from the agencies, because there is no way to contact them or talk to them without their report in hand. I know this from experience with my mortgage. The reports my lender got were wrong (not enough to hurt me) and I still could not contact the agencies without buying reports.
