I have a 1999 SVT Contour. I take very good care of my car. The black paint has started checking or cracking whatever you want to call it. Either way I am not happy. The car is ouside the 3 years 36,000 mile warranty. I want to know if this has happened to anyone else. I have called Ford they don't care. I will continue to call them.

yeah, mine is doin the exact same thing . they are small little cracks that u cant even feel if u run ur hand across them, but are noticeable. its on my hood, roof, and trunk. an autobody place told me its most likely the cause of a bad factory primer. before gettin it repainted those areas would have to be sanded down until theres no paint before repainting because if not it would most likely start happenin again.

they may have made up complete [censored], but since i know nothing about paint, i would never know. best if you hear it from someone else on here that knows more about it.

good luck

oh yeah, Welcome to CEG!

I was at the Meguiar's headquarters recently for a wax and shine day and was told by their in-house wax specialist that I had the worst factory paint he had ever seen in his 20+ years of waxing cars

Paint checking, clearcoat crackling and overspray... oh my.

Good luck with that. Once your car is out of the warranty period it will be very difficult to get Ford to acknowledge the problem, let alone reimburse you in any way. It is a known issue with dark colors on these cars, black in particular. There have been discussions on this to determine if it was particular batches of cars that had this problem or if certain environmental factors caused the problem to surface for some people (living near factories, coastlines). In the end, though, the only thing you can really do is get a repaint by a professional shop.

This is just a typical FORD problem..you will not get any help from FORD. Spend $4000 and get it stripped to bare metal and repainted...if you know someone, like me...a friend could help save you money if he has experience..Good luck!! I have dont all the work myself and have about $1500 in it..so, just swallow your lump in your throat and go for it.

I am not currently having this problem, or have seen it on a car yet. Does it look like someone took a pine tree branch and scratch the car under the clear coat? LOL I know that is a weird analogy but thats the only thing I could think of!

just take a look at any contour with a dark color. Chances are it has the problem. pre 98 is a best source cause of its age..but they are all starting to do it at some time or the other.
