Hard drive is maybe half full. Could it really be the video card? It worked fine for over a week. Safe mode doesn't seem to speed anything up either. Thanks for everyone trying to help.

What about when you enter the BIOS? Is it delayed then, as well? If you have have a boot disk or old Win98 CD lying around you could boot to one of those in DOS and see if you're still slower than you should be.
If you experience slowing in the DOS scenario as well, you may have some dead cache on the CPU.

My computer slows down sometimes and I have to use disk defragmenter. To run disk defragmenter click start/ go to all programs/ accessories/ system tools/ then click disk defragmenter.
I used the system restore to go back a few days after I downloaded windows updates.

If you press the ctrl alt & del keys at the same time then click the processes tab, you can look and see which programs are using your CPU. There will be a percentage number next to each program. There might be too many programs on the start up menu or one of the programs might have a problem and might be using up all of your CPU's capacity.

Try doing doing some basic maintenance, such as a scandisk, disk defragment and then a disk cleanup. I'm not sure on XP, however under the run command they may operate as follows:
scandisk dfrg.msc cleanmgr
or they may all be under the 'start' - 'programs' - 'accessories' - 'system tools'.
Hope this helps.

If safe mode isn't helping any then it isn't a driver issue. I have seen this type of slowdown on many occasions, and it is usually from 3 things. 1) I did this to my machine, somehow I fuxored up my system when messing around with the shell. Easy fix, just changed my shell back to explorer.exe - even though it took me like a half hour of waiting. But, you weren't messing with that so... 2) Driver problem. Again, safe mode would remedy this. 3) Bad hard drive I took a look at hp's site but can't seem to find anything of use. When I have more time i'll take another look. If you boot with the xp cd and launch the recovery console you can run a chkdsk from the command prompt (chkdsk c:) I would try that first...I suppose it's possible your file system could have gotten messed up somehow but that usually stops the computer from booting at all. Worth a shot though. If ya had a dell I could help you more, I am more familiar with their built in diagnostics. Sorry. Originally posted by Kremithefrog: Hard drive is maybe half full. I don't know why your task manager would be taking 70-90% of your processing time. Maybe it's defragmenting in the background? My task manager with xp pro only uses about 2-5%
Check to make sure there are no programs in your startup folder before you reboot. Also check your scheduled tasks to see if anything is set to run from there.

Ad-aware, SpyRemover (formerly Spy-Bot), and HijackThis (read the directions with this one) are all great tools. I would also update your virus definitions and run a scan. That doesn't sound like hardware problem, more of a software issue. My fiance had a similar problem and as I was digging through her system found that she was FULL of stuff. Now she's running just as fast as ever. Her machine is only 800mhz with 128MB RAM.
Hope that helps some!

ad-aware will help resolve a lot of problems, usually slow down. Other programs that I use on a monthly bases.
Ad-aware: Cleans up spyware programs that slow your computer and your internet expierence down
Evidence Eliminator: Cleans up internet tracks and other unwanted files on your computer, (temparay files that became pernament.
McAfee/Norton Virus Software: Do a complete scan with the lastest version and updated definitions.
Defrag: Go to start menu > Run > dfrg.msc or Windows Key + R type in dfrg.msc, Defrag all your drives. Takes a bit, but adds a lot of speed to everything
Scan Disk: My Computer (on desktop) > C:\ (or main desired drive) right click on the drive, choose properties, then choose Tool Tab, and Use Error-Checking (scan disk), Defrag can also be found here.
Disk Clean Up: Go to Start Menu > Run > cleanmgr or Windows Key + R type in cleanmgr.
Disk Clean up can find tons of stuff, I decieded it was time I did it and found almost 1 GB worth of crap files. Hey see what you can find.
Also, every 9-12 Months do a complete reformat. Nothing speeds up a computer like a reformat.

Posting from my old 200mzh pionex (faster than my newer computer, i'm sad),,, anyways,, I'm doing something to windows rite now, i did a system restore set to 20 days ago but it didn't help at all. So I think I'm reformatting windows, I'm not sure, I hit F10 during the HP boot up screen, and instead of the non-destructive recovery, i'm doing the full out recovery, but because something is messed up, it's taking forever, I figure I got atleast 4 more hours before it's done. If this doesn't help, I don't know what I'm gonna do. HP doesn't include a XP boot up disk, they say to just do recoveries from the hard drive partition. I tried calling their support, and they want $30 for a week's support, screw that. The computer is VERY slow from the second I turn it on, so I don't think it's just a problem with windows,, but I don't know what the problem is. I don't see anywhere to run a scandisk,, I tried it in the command prompt, and tried chkdisk, neither worked. Before this, I would defrag atleast once a week, computer is clean of ad-ware,etc. No unneeded programs on startup. It went from playing GTA3 fine to barely running just a few hours later. I'm about ready to throw the thing out the window. It's been doing whatever it's doing for 2 hours now with only 30% done..... I guess we'll see what happens,,, Dude, I think I mite empty my wallet and just get a dell.
