Mine only does it when i'm stopped. The speedo will go anywhere from 20-80 mph. If if pop it into neutral and raise the rpm's slightly the speedo will go back to zero. I think in the last year I have put an extra 500 miles on my odometer while sitting at traffic lights/stop signs. lol

I remember someone had a spark plug wire problem that cause some crazy codes. Maybe your wires are putting interference in the harness somewhere. Worth a look. If you haven't changed your wires yet, wouldn't hurt anything either.

I disconnected the speed sensor. Speedo died. It did nothing. I think I will try checking the grounds for the engine. I did some work on it.

Get an OBD-II scan tool and pull up the vehicle speed and see if what the scan tool says agrees with what the speedometer says...if not, maybe the speedometer is messed up... (The scan tool is will pull the data from what the engine computer sees as the current VSS reading).

I'd guess that Contour instrument clusters aren't too expensive (under $100) from the wrecking yards, so maybe it'd be worthwhile to try swapping it out...

There are two speed sensors. One in the transmission which controls shifting and other on an ATX I think just sends output to your comp and speedo on a MTX, and one in the dash that also controls the speedometer and odometer. I know because the one in my tranny went out and the car shifted like a beast but the speedo, and tach didn't work and neither did the odometer. heck if you don't mind going without a speedo or a tach then that would be the best way to drive around and keep the miles down lol j/k. but anyway I found out the hard way it was the one in the tranny because i replaced the one in the dash and it was still giving problems. So try the one in the dash if you haven't replaced it yet. They will take them back if its not it.

My main car (1969 Mustang Mach1) Second car (1993 Probe GT 2.5 5spd) needs a crank due to oil starvation, and water pump failure. Third car (1998 Contour SE 2.5 ATX) runs purrrrrrrfect. Trying to get rid of speed limiter currently.
