Ok, my check engine light came on so I had it diagnosed at a shop 68 bones. They said that I needed a speed sensor. If they installed it it would've cost 50 bucks parts and $550 labor. No I don't think so. I bought a sensor for 45 and installed it but it still doesn't work. Anybody have any experience with this??

Post the CEL (Christmas Elf Light) code. That will give everybody a place to start.
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

regardless of what you do, DON'T PAY TO HAVE YOUR CODES PULLED... go to Autozone... if you have those in your area... they pull for free, any time..

I forgot the codes, I went to Autozone first for the speed sensor but then my car died right in front of this shop so I just pulled in there and let them go to town. My speedometer is going crazy. If I sit at a stop light it will say I am doing 80-160mph. It is putting a lot of extra miles on the car that I don't need.

Which speed sensor did you replace? The TSS or the VSS?

When sitting at a stop your speedo goes from 80-160mph, So is this the what they diagnosed as a speed sensor? My 2000 SE V6 has done this intermittentley for about a year now. I am convinced it is a charging issue(maybe a loose ground) with my car, because it only does it once in a while, usually with a high electrical load such as the a/c on high or something. As asked before, what spped sensor did you replace? The Vehicle Speed Sensor would control your speedometer and it is located above you right axle shaft and behind your rear exhaust manifold. They are a PITA . Is this the one you replaced?

I really can't think of any way that the VSS would fail that would cause it to make the speedometer read 80MPH when the car is not moving. The VSS simply outputs pulses (8000 pulses per mile) of 12VDC current--on, off, on, off, etc...
Maybe unplug the VSS and see if the speedometer continues to go crazy, if it does, that eliminates the VSS as being the problem.

I replaced the VSS. It doesn't only do it when I am at a stop light. It does it when I drive also.
