If you read my last message, you've heard that the guy (or girl... let's not be sexist) who stole my radio cut my premium sound cable. My new head unit is a 45 x 4 which is plenty loud for my musical tastes and after learning that Ford doesn't sell replacement cables without buying the entire underdash harness i've decided to bypass the amp. The speaker lines comeing from the amp are in a harness but to use another harness to connect it to the headunit requires that i plug in the premium cable. (unless anyone knows of a different harness???) So i was thinking i'd cut the wires from the amp out harness and connect the head unit cables directly to the individual speaker cables. Does this sound possible?

Sounds like you have a Pioneer head unit.I just installed one and am very pleased.Crutchfield sells an amp bypass harness for Contours that is very handy. You just solder 8 speaker wires from the new head unit to this bypass harness and then plug the other end into the existing stock speaker harness. The wire colors even match up. The sound is so much better you'll be thanking the theiving weasle that nailed you.

Schosche makes an adapter cable to allow connecting an aftermarket receiver to the Ford speakers using the Ford speaker cables/connector without cutting. It bypasses the factory amp. Scosche P/N FD02. I bought mine at Walmart for about $7.00.
Just disconnect the rectangular connector (the one with 8 terminals) from the factory amp - plug in the Scosche connector to this connector - connect your new receiver's speaker output wires to the Scosche wires. That's it. The small rectangular connector/cable going to the factory amp is not used.
