As I quickly read this thread, I didn't notice if anyone has already responded on how to easily tell if it is the water pump or not.

One of the ways to tell if it is the water pump impeller failure is to see if you have heat from the heater. If the heater is hot, the water pump is working. If the heater gives off no heat when the engine is warm and there is enough coolant to reach the heater core, it is not the water pump. In this case, it is usually a thermostat that is stuck shut.

Ok after leaving my car where it was for the night I decided to try and drive it home, Being that it cooked down all night and then engine was running nice and cool I got as far as possible. A couple of things I did notice

1) The engine leveled off at at the A in normal on the heat gauge for a while before actually getting to L,

2) I had the heat blasting the whole time with nothing but cold air coming out.

3) After deciding my enginee was too hot and pulling over there was a "build up" of pressure in the collant resevior(sp?) Some coolant was coming out of the top black hose, maybe even the bottom one too I didn;t really notices and the coolant lvl was much higher then it is when the car is off anf the level is at right about max.

All this leads me towards the tstat. I am thinking it might be stuck shut which is not letting water through and could that also be causing the pressure in the coolant tank?

Still sounds like a h2o pump to me, but anyways, how bout just replacing them both? There both pretty easy to do and not too costly and both (especially the pump) are prone to failure. Quit driving and quit posting and just fix it.

Yeah I forgot I was a mechanic and while I am at it the engine is eventually going to go too, might as well replace that.

And I did quit driving it for the time being but I had to get it home sometime, seeing as though I wasn't fortunate enough to have this happen in my driveway.

This is a waterpump concern. As someone tried to explain, but I think kinda got confused, If your water pump is working and your T-stat is stuck closed, you will STILL have hot air coming out of you defrost because the water pump is still circulating the water through your heater core. The car would overheat because the T-stat being closed will not allow the water to circulate through your engine. If the water pump is not working you will not have HOT air coming out of your defrost because it is not being circulated through your heater core or the engine for that matter. When replacing your $60 waterpump it is also a good idea to replace your $10 T-stat just for good measure.

Ok so it sounds more like a waterpump issue which is fine.
I was also wondering if anyone had any diagrams of that oart of the engine. I haven;t got around to buying the book for my car which I should be doing soon. I think someone in a different thread mentioned one in the parts section or something but I didn't see anything. From what I have been reading this doesn't like too hard of a job. Speaking of what I have been reading. I think I am getting confused on a couple of things as for the placement of the tstat and the water pump. From what I have read and thought to have understood......
The 2 parts are next to each other.
They are located underneath the battery somewhere.
My confusion is I thought the water pump was located with in the belt which is on the left side of the engine bay and the battery is located on the right side. Looking at the engine of course, not from the inside of the car.

Must be a ford technician, mechanics I know fix their small things like this on their vehicles without having to ask about it. Yeah, you really should replace the engine, it probably isn't worth a crap anyways.

But on your car (if you go look under the hood), the water pump is on the right side (looking from front of car) it has a belt driven I believe by the cams. Tstat is in same general area. A Haynes manual is available on autozone or just about any parts store, just ask them for it. Or since you are a mechanic and all, you should be able to just get the parts and figure it out. From what I understand the h2o pump is easy to replace on duratecs and I know the tstat is easy. Even on a zetec, the h2o pump isn't that hard to do and could be done without the use of any manual, especially by a mechanic.

Mine did all of that when the waterpump went out. My coolant tank was gurgling spitting coolant everywhere and I had no heat. If the thermostat is stuck shut, you would still have heat because it comes from the intake rather than the radiator. You have no heat because the waterpump isnt pumping the water through the core.

I just looked back through this post and noticed that we've all assumed you have a V6 tour. If you do, the water pump is on the right side looking from the front into the engine compartment. It is covered by a small plastic cover that I believe bolts to the valve cover. The pump is driven by a small belt via the camshaft in the left cylinder head. The pump is easy to replace if you only replace the outter half with an aftermarket pump. The T-stat is located on the same side right above the tranny, follow the hoses and you will see it is pretty obvious.
