i posted on here a few weeks ago about wanting to buy a digital camera, and last week i ordered the sony dsc-v1 (5 mp, 4x opt. zoom, zeiss lens, etc.) and got it yesterday. i looked at the canon S50 and a few others but my heart was set on the V1 - for some reason i just liked that camera a lot from the first time i saw one in best buy or circuit city or something. good size, good features, and based on all the reviews i've read, good performance and value.

so, i bit the bullet and ordered one last week (pcnation.com, $517 w/ free shipping when i ordered on friday morning). the fedex man got it to my door by yesterday afternoon, just in time to play with it over the Christmas holidays before i have to use it "fo' real" at the detroit auto show in january.

one question i have: i'm obviously going to need more than the single 32mb memory stick that it came with, but before i rush out and buy a 128mb or 256mb card, is there any quality difference between the different memory stick manufacturers? i think i've read that there are 4 different brands - sony, sandisk, i-o media or something like that, and maybe one more. for the most part, they seem to be priced similarly, but is it worth the extra $5 or whatever to get an actual sony one, or are any of the others just as good for a few bucks less?

i'm probably going to try to pick up an extra battery as well, since it supposedly only has, at best, an hour and a half of battery life....might not be enough for something like the NAIAS.

anyway - thanks to those who made recommendations in my previous post! i'm looking forward to using my V1....seems really nice from my piddling around with it last night.

It generally doesn't matter who makes your mem sticks. No point in paying more for the sony label.

Not for sure on the MS type of memory but for my camera- Olympus C-750 if I don't use the olympus brand Xd card, I can't use some of the functions like panorama. Might read through your manual for some specific exclusions like that. Also, if you don't need the memory right away, you can buy it online cheaper. You can get pretty good deals on new memory on ebay or search at places like www.pricegrabber.com

bishop375 - that's kinda what i was thinking.....thanks.

buckshot - i'll check into it, but as far as i can recall from skimming the manual last night, there isn't anything like that w/ the sony's....and i looked at pricegrabber for the camera but didn't feel comfortable w/ the retailer reviews on most of the cheaper sites, so i went w/ pcnation, which i found on www.cnet.com and had about the same price.

tommysvt - thanks for the link. looks like a pretty good deal - hadn't thought about newegg.com.

roger - i'll see what i can do. i'll probably get out this weekend and take a few pics here and there....heheh.

I have a Sony S85, the prrvioud model to the V-1. The memory sticks are ALL licensed by Sony and all work alike. Get the least expensive. I have a Sony 128, and 2 Lexar 128's. The Lexars seem to download a little faster than the Sony.

Good luck with the Camera. I love my S85. It takes fantastic pictures. The V-1 should be as good or better.

PS- Get an external flash. Indoor pictures come out much better with a real flash. The little internal one doesn't really have the horsepower for best results.

Thinking about it now, with the 5mp camera, you might want to get a minimum of 256meg card.

My 4mp camera can put 110 pics on a 128meg and 200 on a 256meg card.

Yeah, you will need to look into a 256meg card.

yeah - assuming the aftermath of Christmas expenses doesn't pucker my wallet too tightly i'm gonna try for a 256mb one. they're not that much more than the 128's....so....we'll see.

for roger (and others) - here are a few pics from this morning, take of the miata after installation of its new brainstorm performance grille insert (and as BSP notes on their website, it's hard to get a decent pic of a horizontal-bar grille - they tend to go wavy on you...these looked better before resizing, but oh well).
