There is a high-pitched whining noise coming from the engine compartment that I am having trouble localizing. It is common when the temp is below 30F outside. It happens at idle and when, for example, coasting in gear. If I didn't know it was in the front end I would swear on a stack of Bibles that it is the fuel pump dying. It likes to stall at idle as well, but very infrequently. I have searched around the forums and the best possibility I found is the power steering pump. All your guys'(gals too) thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Next time it happens, pop the hood & grab the air horn accordian thingy. If the noise stops, you might have some odd moose symptoms to deal with - which is no biggie.

Otherwise, try to isolate the sound to a particular component, AND WATCH OUT FOR YOUR SCARF!! Don't get caught up in the machinery!

If your "whine" developes into a "foghorn" then it it's time to replace your IAC valve. Try a search under "moosing."
