I had the battery in my '95 Contour last about 7 1/2 years before I replaced it. My car was a Nov '94 build and I replaced it in the summer last year. It was actually fine and I didn't think it could last much longer. Got a replacement at K-mart for $45 so it was cheap insurance for the winter.

Like someone else said, 1.1 miles probably isn't enough to charge the battery and you should also check the under hood light bulb, make sure it's going off. You can also check for a current drain by putting a meter on it. Running the battery all the way down is also another quick way to kill it and those short drives are probably doing it.

Yah, we were told to check to see if the car pulls any amps out when nothing is running, shouldnt pull much.... not even 1 amp I believe. But the car does pull power out for the stereo, PCM, and any type of security featueres. I know a friend's Tempo kept pulling alot of power till I decided to find where the energy is being used all at. Turned out the trunk light was staying on. Might wanna investigate if any features are pullin more engery than it should.

Then ride it during the winter.

Not so crazy. I used to ride it year round. But NY winters being what they are, a little ice goes a long way towards introducing your posterior to the pavement.

In addition, as I aged, my ability to straighten out my legs after an hour of riding convinced me to use more civilized means of transportation. I still have my insulated Coveralls, Apple Warmer and gauntlet gloves. Just don't want to feel the pain anymore.

Also, BIG also, the Bike never could charge the battery well anyway (Honda charging systems on 1976 model year bikes are sucky). The thing is always on charge.
