OK, so I'm through my first semester of college and I'm already on my 3rd major. I started off being music business...that was fun but it just wasnt for me. So then I decided sociology would be cool. Shortly after changing majors to socio, I realized theres almost nothing that I can do with that degree that I'd wanna do. So now I'm a psychology major with an athletic training minor. *right now* the plan is to graduate from undergrad, be a certified personal trainer, then use that to help me pay for grad school where I get my PhD in sports psychology. After that who knows.
So the point of this post is to ask...how long did it take for you to decide on your major? I wouldnt be surprised if I switched another hundred times. Is this out of the ordinary? I guess I figure I'm still early in my college career...So yeah, how long? -David

what's up man. been a long time...see you've moved on to the 'stang. anyways..i went through the same indecision as you when i first started college. first i thought i would be interested in comp sci, then comp engineering, and then i realized i hated coding and couldn't spend a good portion of my life staring at computer screens and diagrams and project plans and blah blah blah. so i decided that i would get involved in a business major (business admin) since it was more generalized and left room to change my career aspirations without changing my major. my advice...concentrate on getting your core classes out of the way right now. don't think too far down the line just yet. however, if you think you might be interested in sports medicine think about getting involved in the physical therapy and rehab field. it's not as intense as a phd, but you can still reap some the same benefits as a phd as far as job stability and pay. good luck.

I changed my major once, from Accounting to Computer Science. I did it halfway through my 2nd semester as a freshman, and never looked back. Try to decide on what you want as soon as possible, otherwise, your 4 year education could turn into 5 or 6 years. I changed my major once, and it cost me 1/2 year.

I decided on accounting before entering Junior High School (7th grade) because the school system kept cramming down our throats the notion that we have to choose now in order to choose the proper high school classes to better prepare us for college. I looked at what I was good at (math) and had my mom help me choose a career based on my skills at that point. from there I chose classes that were offered that related to accounting. I greatly enjoyed my accounting classes in high school, so I decided to stick with that and made that my major for college. I still enjoy the concepts, but I hate the environment. i've tried my hand at 3 years of public accounting and am now out of it trying for the private side. if that doesn't work, I'm screwed. I had no plan B ever. I'm kicking myself for studying so long to have a desk job. when you're young and have a great metabolism, you dont think of what sitting at a desk for 8 hours with minimal physical activity can do to your body. flub flub I shoulda gone into a line of work that required I bust my ass all day instead of using my stupid mind.

I decided on architecture in about the 7th grade. I now have 3 semesters left out of the 5 year plan of studies and am still loving it.

I didn't declare a major until 1st. semester Sophomore year. In fact, I tried to declare one a semester early, but the department head suggested I wait. Good advice, because I ended up with a different one.

I picked my major my junior year of high school and never changed it. Not much help for you. However, my sister-in-law started at one school towards one degree, then changed schools the next year, then a third school the third year. She is really hurting IMHO because she will have gone for 7 or 8 years for a dual degree, like 160 credits. I had 181 (180 required for my BS) in 5 years. I hope it works out for her, but I look at it as 2-3 years longer you could be making $50k/yr vs. getting and extra $10k/year in school loans.
IMHO, you will find out with more experience in the business/working world that there are at least 10 ways in which one person is interested in earning a living. Just pick one that will pay to support your desired lifestyle and stick to it. The sooner will your reward be, which is earning the real money and enjoying the non-work part of your life.
