Sorry about this post I know it's been asked before ( i just lost the link and since the search is not working.. )

2000 SVT with 53k return-less fuel system.

It all stated after I ran out of gas... (fist time ever! in 16 years of driving)

At hight RPM's when the tank is below 1/2 full the engine starts to die. Fill up the tank and it runs fine. Already changed the fuel filter and it helped a little but I still have the problem.

The kicker is that it's been going on since the car had 15k miles. I would have figured the pump would have died by now if it was going bad or the mesh would be getting more clogged? I checked the mesh before and it looked ok!

I figure if I am going to open the tank, I may was well change the pump out. But since there are so many problems with the stock pump (or mesh clogging) then is there a viable after market alternative (just a drop in).

The plan...

  • check or change fuel filter for clog
  • ckeck mush for clog
  • if all else fails replace pump
  • what else am I missing?

Thanks

The problem with fuel pumps is that they're cooled by the gasoline they're sitting in, so when you run out of gas the pump overheats and eventually starts to fail. I don't know if aftermarket pumps will fare any better if they are allowed to overheat, but I suppose its possible. If you go aftermarket, try Walbro pumps.

I know you probably don't want to hear it , but running the tank dry has very likely damaged the pump. It may take forever to completely fail, but that's not a risk I would take. Cleaning filters, fuel lines, etc. may help, but you're really only delaying the inevitable.

Remember to check the circular mesh at the bottom of the housing. I had the same problem and it was the circular mesh clogged.

If the car runs alright with a full tank, the pump is likely to be o.k.

Clean the suction mesh on the pump and toss the circular one on the bottom and I bet you will be o.k.

That's not true. If the search function was up and running I'd have links galore, but for now, this will have to do:

EDIT: I should clarify a little... clogged filters and screens can definitely cause a fuel starvation condition, but so can failing fuel pumps. Since he has already run it out of gas, its very possible the pump was damaged. As the fuel level drops and the rpms increase, the pump has to work harder (and hotter) which can cause the hesitation.

My thought, the screen costs $14.00, the pump cost $100.00, try the screen, if that doesnt work replace the pump, plus you've already got a new screen

I agree, but the sucky part is having to get in there to pull the pump to change the filter, then if that doesn't work having to go back in to change out the pump. The "right" way according to Ford is to drop the tank (not fun!) but even the shortcuts look crappy. This is nothing like replacing the external fuel filter underneath the car.

I agree Mike, but no one will ever see it. Its under the back seat. I did mine that way and no one is none the wiser. If anything ever happens again I can pull it out in matter of minutes. After ripping the metal though use some paint to prevent rust.

I did the same thing. Looks sloppy, but how many times do you ever show off the space under your back seat? Not to mention how much easier the under seat method is.

To answer your question, the Walbro pump can be used with some minor modification to the pump housing. If you want to go this way, contact SPmotorsports.com. They sell the proper pump for around 80 bucks. If you contact Kinger here on the boards, he can send you the Walbro how-to.

Whichever pump you use, just remember to toss the disc screen in the garbage. It will just get clogged again. The sock filter inside the housing is more than enough.

I looked more into the Walbro pump and I don't think it will add much.. gonna just replace the pump with and OEM one.

Is this the disk screen your talking about?

I also think i may just suck the tank dry and clean out any chucks I can find.

Thank you all for any help or idea's.
