I have a 1999 SE Sport with the Duratec.

I was driving on 494 at about 50 mph and the CEL came one.

I took it to autozone and it reads a P0420. I think this code is something about the catalytic converter efficiency threshold.

I have 76,000 miles. Should I take this to the dealer. Is it covered under the 80,000 mile emissions warranty?

Yup, the only code.

I am thinking it might be one of the cats.

Yes, take it to the dealer IMMEDIATELY!

Normally wouldn't say that, but your 8/80 warranty is about gone.

Do not let the dealer tell you that it is an O2 sensor, it is the pre-cats.

I called the dealer and they said that its "very rare" and that only the computer is convered under the emissions warranty. Of course, in order to find out for sure, its a $100 diagnostic fee.

What should I do?

Oh and they also said that since Minnesota doesn't have emissions testing, the only way the converter qualifies for the warranty if its towed in plugged up.

I just got my cat replaced at the dealer for free last week under the 80k emissions warranty. I am pretty sure I had the same code.
