Okay recap.
Since May 14 my car would make a squealing sound until it heated up. October 31, serpentine belt replaced for $85. Sound gone all but on acceleration and it is slighty heard now, only with radio off and window down you can hear it.
Anyway is your idler pulley all shiney silver? Mine is think that could be causing the sound?

I had my idler pulley replaced a long time ago because of the squealing (any temp) and it fixed it. It was black and time of install but is now starting to get shiny silver. I also have the squeal when cold now but it goes away when warm, not really sure what the deal is.

What does this idler puley thing do anyways? If I wanted to could I take it off and drive around the block a few times to see if the sound is gone?

I imagine the idler pulley is there for a reason, and if you removed it you'd also have to get a shorter belt... But it has to be there for a reason,, not sure what the reason is though... and belt dressings are a bad idea and only a temporary fix.

The timing belt controls the water pump.
The serpentine belt controls the power steering, air, alternator, and a few other things. The idler pulley is the thing right ontop of the belt, it is wrapped around it, the belt runs under it only.

No the serpentine belt runs under the idler pulley only, not on top of it. I dont use belt dressing either.

There's nothing wrong with a "shiny" pulley. Your problem is with the press-in bearing. Ford wanted approx. $75 CDN for a complete assembly (the only way they sell it). I bought a new bearing for $6 and pressed it in myself. Your pulley should be shiny as the belt is constantly shining it up!
