I have been having a problem for a while with my tour. The problem is that when I accelerate, the car hestitates and then takes off kind of sudden. I notice it mainly when the fuel level is low, but does occur slightly when it is full. It goes away nearly all together right after I have filled the tank up.
Since the search function has been turned off, I was not able to do so. I am wondering if it is the fuel pump or some device to regulate the fuel pressure(?). I don't know very much about the fuel system so some info from a more knowledgeable person would be great.
Thanks

Do you hear a sucking woosh when the gas cap is removed? Bad gas caps can cause vacuum in the tank.
I guess it could be the pump screen. Test the fuel pressure.

Problems when the fuel tank is low usually indicate fuel pump problems. I had an Oldsmobile that had the same symptom. It has to do with "suction head" available to the pump. Its greater when the gas level is higher which helps the pump deliver greater pressure than when the level is lower.

Thanks for the responses. I do NOT hear a sucking sound when I remove the gas cap. When you say it could be the pump screen, what do you mean? How would I go about testing the fuel pressure?
I am hoping to try other things before I resort to changing the fuel pump ($$$). But if I have to, is there a how-to for changing the fuel pump? Is it a major job?
Thanks again for your help.

Fuel filter... Our mystique had the same problem, it would hesitate when the fuel was low (around 1/4) and run ok when it had a full tank.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried that once and it seemed to work for a few days, then the hesitation came back. I should probably change it again anyway...

i have kind of a similar problem, mine has a little hesitation with starting when the fuel is low. if i start it when the fuel is low, i have to turn the key slightly longer and the RPM is lower when it first starts, then its fine after that. scared me the first few times it would happen cause i thought it was a sign i was going to run out of gas, but the car works perfect, so i dont worry about it anymore

I am afraid it may be a fuel pump. More gass less time pump has to work to achieve presurre! Low gas while accelerating means that pump has to struggle to achieve the required fuel presurre for the FI system to operate.

Sounds like the pump. The is a how to for changing the returnless pump on the main page. I know yours is the return style, but the how-to should give you an idea of what needs to be done. As mentioned, pull the pump and clean the filter on the pump itself to see if that helps. If not, try the pump.

a bad gas cap will release the wacuum from the tank and cause a check engine light. the vacume that builds in the tank is normal.
