What a way to start off a Monday. Sure this has come up a bunch of times and I did find something in search but still unsure. I did not feel or hear anything with the fuel pump when the key was in forward position. Car in turning over so I would guess its not the battery or starter. Starter was replaced already in the car so I would believe its not that. Where is the fuel shut off switch? Would like to check that as well. Any help as to what this could be or things to check would be extremely helpful. Thanks so much!!

you should check the crankshaft position sensor. i just had to replace that on my car. it would turn over but wouldnt start. not a very expensive part either. even from the dealer its not too bad (mines under warranty, so i was forced to go there).

oh by the way, i think this part only breaks when you really need to drive somewhere. mine broke when i needed to drive to the airport for thanksgiving. funny how cars seem to know when you really need them.

I bet it is the fuel pump. I had this same problem this past spring and she left me stranded. The fuel shut off switch is located under the pannel next to the dead petal on the drivers side footwell. I dont remember it being to hard to get at and mine was tripped when I checked it. My car would turn over ebut just wasnt getting any fuel and i had noticed that the "humm" of the fuel pump wasnt there when i turned the key to on. The fuel pump is a pain in the arse to replace too if your like me without a garage/tools in college. You have to drop the tank to get to it. There is a hole under the rear seat to "look" at it but it just isnt big enough to access the pump!! Damn Ford!Anyway I hope that helps you out. I bought a pump from autozone that came with a liftime warrenty and was alot cheaper than anywhere else i had looked. However I think my fuel pump may be going again. this is the second one in 73k!

Hello,

Was wondering if anyone has ever replaced one of these. Is this something that can be takled by a do it your selfer?? A fellow CEG'er suggested I try this becuase my car is not starting. The part is very cheap and thought I would at least give it a try before getting raped at the dealer. Any advice or info regarding this fix would be much appreciated. Thanks.

This crankshaft position sensor is starting to become a common problem.
I had to replace mine a couple of months ago. Since we were forced to replace the darn thing. The car would turn over but not start. We used that code reader to troubleshoot, and found out what to meter.
That part that I replaced was about $25 from the Ford dealership by my house. I really couldn't shop around since I needed the car asap, considering I had to go to work.

Simple to replace:

Remove electrical connector and one bolt, then pull it out.
Reverse to install.

However, rather than throwing parts at a problem and hoping you strike it rich, a basic diagnosis; such as pulling a plug and checking for fuel/spark, might be a better place to start.

Was fuel cut-off switch found tripped?

p.s. One continuos thread on a problem is preferred.

horseydug,

I saw this thread after posting a new one about an intermittent problem I'm having, where my engine dies (if it happens to be running), and refuses to start... but generally fixes itself within 15-30 minutes.

The problem is, by the time I get my car to the mechanic, it's always working fine, and I just have them scratching their heads. And it happens incredibly rarely. So it would be nice to at least come up with a list of different diagnostic things to try the next time this happens

Sorry for being so dense, but how easily/quickly can one pull a plug? And I assume you just hold it there and see if it's making a spark while an accomplice tries starting the engine? (I would imagine there's no way to see if there's a spark if one is alone in the driver's seat)

Also, is there any other diagnosis you would recommend trying when this problem occurs?

Thanks

When you engage the starter the engine lamp should light up. A few seconds later it should go out. If it doesn't, the computer didn't receive the pickups.

I had a problem similar, I thought my fuel pump was dead, does your CEL (Check Engine light) come on before you turn the key to the START position?
My contour PCM was freaking out in Jaunary... and the fuel pump is controlled partly by PCM. Played with the wiring harness by the PCM, contour runs great now!

I'm trying to get to the PCM but the power steering fluid reservoir is in the way-- how do I remove it? (The Haynes book says to unclip it from the mount on the suspension, but doesn't specify which direction to pull it in... I can see a clip but I can't tell if I'm supposed to pull the reservoir vertically up, or horizontally away from the reservoir, and I'm afraid of breaking it )

Thanx,
