If you are able, you can do it yourself for the cost of parts.
All you have to do is remove the front plastic engine cover, and the battery from it's tie down.
Then, you'll see a belt and pulley on the right side of the engine, opposite side from where the other belts are (altenator, timing belt etc..)
It has a pretensioner so you can easily remove the belt and there's your waterpump. There are 6 screws or so surrounding the perimeter of the pump, remove them and then, gently with a hammer and a flat head screwdriver(wider the better) tap the waterpump at the seam (1/2 of it stays on the engine, the other 1/2 comes off, that's the part with the impeller) Reach in with your finger and see if you can remove any impeller debris from the block. A little coolant will leak so have some to fill the reservoir tank back up. Replace the pump with a new one and a new gasket if you bought one and there you go.
I would bet your thermostat is fine, unless you were driving in the red for a long period of time.
I thought mine was bad too and tested it in boiling water and it was fine, opened right up.
Then just to be safe, take the car to a shop and have the coolant flushed to remove any debris you can't get too and you've done it for around $100.
