Several weeks ago I noticed when putting my car in reverse (it's a manual) the reverse lights flickered a bit. Now they no longer come on at all. Does anyone know anything about the contact that is located on the transmission? Or if it's hard to replace?

Thanks!

First we need to know if ATX or MTX. Then we can go from there.

I replaced mine a couple of weeks ago...not too difficult, you have to take out your airbox (I had to remove the connecting pipe that has the mass airflow sensor, too..I have an SVT, yours might be slightly different) to get to the switch that is sitting on top of the transaxle...it's easy to spot especially if you have the replacement..it's a weird looking switch, kinda brownish color. If you're still not sure get the Haynes manual.

I have this problem ocassionally on my 95. I find that if I push back on the stick, the lights will come back on. That's been my solution for a year and a half.

You will have to check the wires going to the switch itself to rule out any wiring problems before considering a bad switch.

First you will need to take the Air Cleaner and look down on top pf the MTX. You will see a connector with two or four cables on it (depends on year). Violet-White wire will have +12V and Violet-Black will be without voltage. You can jump both wires manually and check your lights coming on. If they don't then check if you have voltage on Violet-White. If not then check fuse F23.

If you have volyage but your lights are not working when you jump the wires, then it could be a bad ground.

Tell me what happens.

On my 95 (ATX) the wires were broken at the point where they entered the left hand trunk lid support arm, or just before. Metal fatigue due to flexing was the apparent cause. The electrical short at this point caused the licence plate lights to come on (and no back up lights) when putting the tranny in reverse . The transmission mechanic figured that out in less than a minute and zeroed in on those paticular wires.I would imagine that his clue that the switch was not the culprit was due to the licence plate lights coming on.
take a look.
