About 7 mos ago I had a new trans and starter installed (underwarranty b/c prev owner knocked it out) hence I got a killer deal on the car ('98 SVT Contour)and everything has been going just fine. Until yesterday when I went to shift from 2nd to 4th, I ran it up to 6500, pushed in clutch (granny shifting not powershifting)and all the sudden I heard this strange growling like noise coming from the engine upon deceleration. So I just put in neautral revved it up to about 6000 or so and the same growling like noise kind of like dragging a cinder block accross the sidewalk not some high pitch grinder like noise. So I shut it off and parked for about 15 minutes. Crawled around didnt see anything leaking, checked the oil and nothing. So I got back in, turned off everything, and hit the starter. Now it sounds like the starter is lugging and I'm thinking that it might be dragging on just not disengaging period. My warrranty expires w/in 6000miles or 4mos. Any suggestions or ???????????????

Also my speedo and fuel guage sometimes just stop working and if I lightly tap the top of the dash with 1 or 2 fingers all the sudden they start working. Any ideas on that one??

I'd take the car right back to the dealer. Its a possibility that something went wrong with the work they performed, or even if its something else, it should be covered by the warranty.

The dash lights sound like it might just be a loose or dirty connection, possibly a loose ground wire.

Thats what I figured with the dash, but I just can't figure that noise out I only have 5800 on the new trans and it shifts fine. I'm just hoping that it isnt a pilot bearing. If it is then I guess here comes a 3.0liter, clutch, headers, injectors, and maf.

I've experienced momentary loss of speedo, plus low fuel light on, a couple of times on my '98. It hasn't happened for about a year now.

There was a thread on the topic, but as I recall no specific solution, everyone suspects bad connection in instrument panel.

Due to it's infrequent and intermittent nature I have not bothered to diagnose probable cause. I'm posting just to indicate probably unrelated to your other problem. FYI.

Edit:
A search using speedo, subject only, will get you a few similar problems, including my post on this one:

If the growling noise is only there when you're on the clutch pedal, than it's probably a pilot bearing or something to do with the pressure plate. On the starter noise: Does the starter turn over the engine? Or does it grind, or just spin? (i.e. Not sure what lugging means?)
