I was not aware of any pump material upgrade in the '99 and newer 2.5L's. I have a '99 myself, and if they upgraded the materials, then it's news to me. The part numbers and information in my maintenance manuals are the same across the board for the pumps. Keep us posted on this important topic...

And it's not napa.com it's NAPA Auto Parts

Autozone's WP has the metal impeller. It's just the front part, does not include the housing.

I went to motorcraft's website and looked up parts for my car. For a 99 Ford Contour, with 2.5 L V6-there are 3 different pumps. I put in all that specific info. above and it gave me 3 different pumps for the same model year and engine. To figure out which one I was supposed to have, they expected me to know what the engine number or something like that was. The owner's manual said nothing about. Does anybody know anything about an engine number? Try looking it up at motorcraft yourself and see what you get. I am looking for a water pump with a metal impeller and a new housing that won't go bad either. Let me know what any of you find. Thanks.

I bought my pump from Ford ($180 !!) a few weeks ago and the parts guy only asked what engine and year. When I get home I'll look at the box and get the number off it and post it.

From this and other posts, it sounds like plastic blades on water pump are a continuing problem. I can't find any recall on it, either at Ford or National Highway Traffic Safety Admin. websites. The NHTSA website (www.nhtsa.dot.gov) had a complaint form that is the first step toward a review leading to a recall. Is it possible that this problem is widespread enough to report and get Ford to replace plastic part with metal?

NHTSA sounds like it has to prevent a safety hazard, but I think having hot coolant spraying from the reservoir or having possible engine failure at highway speeds is a hazard.

Sounds like NHTSA is more likely to investigate if there are numerous complaints. Is it worth it for all here who have been affected by this to fill out the NHTSA online complaint form?

Just wondering . . . I'm waiting for the final verdict on my 96 SE V-6 that was towed to dealer yesterday, but everything so far makes it sound like this is the problem.

Ooops! I mean "NHTSA sounds like it has to present a safety hazard." Also, I'm waiting on word on 98, not 96 SE. Guess I should proofread a little more carefully!

Regarding the part numbers for the various pumps, the one I got from my SVT dealer was #XS2Z8501CC. Don't know what the difference could be between the three that the website lists.
