I only have 22,000 miles on my 99 Contour SE Sport with the Duratec V6. I know I need to get a pump with a metal impeller eventually. I went to Napa, and they said the warehouse had 2 in stock and that it costed about $60.00 or so. But they couldn't tell me what the imepller was made out of or any other information. They said if I want to know they will order it, but then I have to pay them for it. I am NOT paying them for something they can't even tell me about. Napa's internet site is just as useless. So are there any other good options for getting my hands on a metal impeller? Thanks to all who reply.

Go to a different parts store. I heard Pep Boys has the one we need.

Ask NAPA to get the DuroPro 125-1910. It's the gMB pump with the metal impellar, and comes with the gasket. The Regular NAPA one has the plastic impellar, and costs more!

Thanks for the advice. I'll be sure to ask for that specific water pump and I will try the store in the next town. We also have a Pep Boys so if that fails I will go there. Not sure if I am gonna try this myself yet, as I don't need to pay to have it towed and repaired lol. Does anybody have any idea on how much the labor cost would be to have ONLY the pump replaced and nothing else at a dealership, if I gave them the part? Thanks to all who replay.

the '99's may have the improved waterpump...I know Ford changed the composition of the impeller around the 1999 model year. I have a '99 Mystique with over 98,000 miles on it and no problems. I've asked two different dealers about their experience with water pump problems and both denied ever hearing about any unusual problems. I asked the dealer if I should replace my water pump when I did the 90,000 mile service and he looked at me like I was crazy. So I guess I'll live with it a few thousand more miles.

That makes me feel better. I feel safe waiting for sure until the coolant service at 40,000 miles before considaring having it changed. I will go ahead and hold off on getting that part for now. The only reason I worry so much is that I don't check temp gauge often and wouldn't want to ruin my engine. Thanks again. laugh

I'd go ahead and get one...the Napa part number listed above is the metal impeller. Better to spend $60 now and fix it at your convenience than to be broken down, towed, find a ride to the parts store, get it then, and mess up any plans you may have.

I'm obsessive about checking my temp gauge, and I didn't even see it happen. I looked down, everything was fine, looked down a block later and I'm pegged in the RED.

It may not go, but I'd rather do preventative maintenance on a common problem than get stuck in a yet to be determined location and have to worry about it then. And it's not too hard to do yourself, just check out the "How-To" and have at it.

You make a good point. I actually do check my gauge pretty often but I also have to look where I am going, and without a waterpump all it takes in a minute or 2 and your overheated. I wish it had a warning light for that and it made the "bong" sound so I would be sure to see something that important, or just automatically shut off when the engine temp gets to 240 degrees or so. I will probably have it changed out at 40,000 miles when I have the cooling system flushed and refilled. I am gonna let the dealer handle that so, I will let them do the waterpump at the same time. If that P.O.S. pump can't make it at least 40,000 miles I would be really unhappy mad , so I think I will take my chances until then. I will have to admit, other than recalls, I have had no trouble with anything other than slightly warped rotors and defective tires. I think it helps to have a 99, because the worked most of the bugs out by 99. Thanks for everybody's input, it really helped me out. wink

you can order the NAPA waterpump from them on-line, I think it's www.napa.com last time I looked, it was $54.00, and they will ship directly to you. The site should also have a toll-free phone number if you want to call them eek

Thanks for all this input. I found the duropro 125-1910 at Napa's website. It was only about 50.00. I have a question, is that just the "front" part or does that include that back part (cone?) as well? I want to go ahead and have both replaced when I have it done, so there are no excuses for a failure. Thanks again. smile
