What high traction refers to on a tire? Is it a winter tire or something different? Reason I ask is I was taking an old fridge out to the curb for the local big things collection. Where I put the fridge there was a stack of tires. Right on the top there was tires that fit my rims listed as high traction. Barley even used in appearance. There were 5 tires in all so I snagged them in the event I can use them. Needless to say I was surprised by this. Anyways if they are a winter tire I will switch them to the car that doesn't have snows on right now. Otherwise I suppose I will keep them till I need to throw some new ones on. Only thing I can think is someone bought a car and these came with it. They then bought new rims and put snows on the stock rims. Now they don't need them so they put them to the curb.

Call a tire shop, I am sure they will be able to tell you. Also, actual snow tires usually have the snow flake on them.

I may be incorrect - hopefully not, but someone will let me know.

High traction tires are a tire made of softer compounds and used primarily for racing. The problem with these tires is they wear very quickly.

As above posting states, snow and ice tires have a snowflake on them.

Best to contact a professional tire dealer and ask.

Yeah I had looked for a snowflake and didn't see one but thought I would ask anyway. I guess I'll shoot a call to a tire shop as was wisely recommended. Thanks.

I'd be wary about those tires. There may be a chance there's a hidden defect. Freebie beware. What make/brand are they?

Here's a TireRack.com link explaining the Uniform Tire Quality Grade (UTQG) rating system.
