A friend of mind has a 91 grand prix with the 3.1L engine and it runs fairly fine, but studders occationally, but when slowing down to a stop like at a stoplight, the car with studder and die. Now if the car is in Park it will studder, but doesn't always die. SO i'm thinking it's something in the ignition system or maybe the intake (upper and lower and MAF need to be cleaned. Also when driving my friend says there is a 'horrible grinding noise, which is why i stopped driving it. " I do't know what it is, but any advise would be appreciated.

Its a GM - Belongs in the shop :P Unplug the MAF, see if that helps, I know on the Ford my car will run fine without a MAF, but the CEL is on

Well here is what i now know. I got out my dad's code scanner for GM's and it gave me codes 13 and 44, 13 is a general O2 sensor, and 44 is lean condition in exaust. So would those explain for the rough idle?

With these symptoms and codes, I would initially suspect a fuel delivery problem. Have fuel pressure checked and replace fuel filter. Blow through old filter to see how much restriction. Listen for 3 second filter prime when key in on position. May be able to hear an abnormality. If fuel pressure is erratic and not up to snuff, you will have a lean condition and these drivability problems.

That GM vehicle may not have a MAF--it might have a MAP sensor instead.

My first suspicion is an intake leak. The 91 has had plenty of time to dry out & crack a few intake gaskets. Try tightening the intake manifold bolts (BE VERY CAREFUL ABOUT NOT OVER TIGHTENING, ALUMINUM STRIPS EASILY) to the maximum limit of the specifications in the Haynes manual. Note that these specs may be in inch-pounds, not foot pounds. Overtightening is BAD. If that doesn't work, maybe a set of gaskets?
He might be able to find a leak with a can of carb cleaner. Spray it in various seams of the manifold & intake assembly to see if the idle gets worse or the engine dies. Check any hoses & their associated clamps that are connected to the intake.
Good low dollar place to start.
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.
