The only area of the DPFE that you might be able to clean are the two areas where the hoses connect. DPFE is around $55 (discount). Almost double that at the $tealer.

HI, Here are the insides of a DPFE. YOu will have to drill out the rivets and thread (tap) the holes for an 8/32 fillister head screw to put it back together...or re-rivet it. If it's a plastic one...I don't know...be careful when splitting the case. There doesn't apear to be much to "clean"...the one in the photo had about 35k on it. DPFE insides Good luck, ...Ed

I was wondering if (1) gasses pass through the diaphragm or (2) it builds up pressure only on one side of the diaphragm. Did you ever hook up Vehicle Explorer and take measurements of the DPFE that you took pictures of? If so, I would love to see them. I am currently testing the DPFE on my car and would like to compare it to yours, if possible.

I have read at least one member say that the DPFE goes bad because of water condensation, which seems is exactly what happened to yours (from the pictures). See this thread for some more info on this.I was wondering if drying up the water on the two outside surfaces of the diaphragm would fix the DPFE? Or does water get on the inside of the diaphragm also?

Hi, One side appeared to be of a porous ceramic substance, the other has a non-porous membrane over it and appeared to be filled with some sort of gel? Cleaning it up of the water on the surfaces had no noticeable effect. I have since replaced it with a new plastic one (dealer said the metal one is replaced by plastic one). There was again no change in performance. I did not have OBDII available at the time this was done. The water will come back the first time you fire up the engine...the condensation from the exhaust has a straight path to each side of the diaphragm. It must not be that bad of a design...they have been using them for years and with no disproportionate amount of problems that I've seen. ...Ed
