Okay, I ran into this problem just this past week or so.. I changed my oil about last month, and my mileage was about 89k. Next thing you know, my engine is making this clicking, or knocking type noise. It would be louder at idle, and more discreet at higher RPMs. So i check my oil, and it turns out to be PITCH BLACK . So Now i change my oil AGAIN, with thicker stuff.. flushed it out, and added Lucas oil additive. The engine now runs smoother, but the clicking, or tapping, or whatever sound i could use to describe it. My friend says it sounds like I need to change the lifter, or there's something wrong within the engine. I really don't want to take my vehicle to Ford, because so far, everytime i go there.. i end up paying a [censored]-load, and another problem arises within the near future. I searched the forum, and it came up with a leaky fuel injector valve, or even a whole engine replacement.

Another thing is, that before i changed the oil, the sound would once in a while stop for a short while, and come back on after a really soft thud.. or rather tap from the sound of the engine.

Thanks for all, if any help...

Ren

I was actually just wondering about this the other day. My car was also clicking when I bought it and the dealership (not Ford) told me it was probably just noisy lifters. I recently heard Demon say it's probably the noisy injectors, which makes sense to me. Sounds like you have a different problem though; mine is a constant, consistent, light clicking that can only be heard at idle.

It's similar to that. It can mainly be heard on idle. Kind of like a fan flapping on a piece of paper or something. At higher revs, it can barely be heard. Maybe the black oil caused the injector to become dirty? I'm thinking if i should have the injectors replaced, because of what you have said. Maybe that may be the problem. I'll see what can be done.

By the way, i'm at 91k miles now.

Hopefully your problem is different then mine, but it sounds exactly how mine started....I developed a "ticking" that sounded definietly upper end but distinctly different from injectors (which should be audible at idle). I tried several things that you are mentioning, but after a couple months, the ticking is now over-powered by a distinct KNOCK (very audible at start-up, but not noticeable at hiher RPM's). I threw a cel code and took it the dealer to investigate. The cel is a bad pre-cat (this was the ticking, lighter noise...almost like marbles in a steel can...cat is fried). The cat is covered under warranty. The knock according to the dealer is a "lower failure" and they said they could rebuild it for $6k US or replace with a crate motor for $4500 US. I have absolutely NO loss of power or driveability and other than the noise would not know something was amiss. I've been driving it this way for 6 months now waiting for the fateful day (and fighting with ford). This occurred at 48k miles.....Since it hasn't failed in the last six months, I'm thinking maybe a wrist pin. Hope this isn't your problem!

You know i had the same problem with my tour, it was a ticking/knocking sound coming from the passenger side, like a lifter or something, it wasnt there at startup but when it got operating temperature it would be there, if i reved the engine you could barely hear it, it was annoying, i was ready for a new engine. (I read the above post that states a longblock from Ford at over $4,000 dollars, wow thats a ripoff, i can get one from my local Ford dealer for about $2,350 (longblock) plus of course uncle Sam, recently i know i shouldnt say this here but i raced an Eclipse Turbo i reveed the engine so high in every gear just to win (in which i did) i reved it so high that the noise was gone after,(true story) all that time that the noise was there it ran perfectly fine though. Just my $0.2 .

i had bouth problems noise at startup for a sec and no noise at idle but after the car warmed up it would tick so to fix this i went to searspoint and ran a 14.7 in the quarter and the noise went a way,
the problem is the timeing chain slack adjusters arnt taking up all the slack reving the engine will free it up

I have had the same experience here recently. The CSVT's been parked for about a month while I've been enjoying the Miata. Now, she ticks as bad as the HLAs do on the 1.8 after a quick autocross run.

I'll try the "Italian Tuneup" on the way home, and prolly do the Berryman's in the tank and in the intake manifold later this week. Time to buy some spark plugs!
