Has anybody ever replaced this? Is it difficult? What does it actually do?

I've never replaced but it's just held in place by one small bolt.

At leftside of v6 engine (viewed from front of car) just below front camshaft cover.

Its the sender to trigger the injectors re cam position.The crang sensor covers most of the spark function but fuel injection needs to know what stroke ecach cylinder is on re timed injection,the fact that the cams travel 1/2 engine speed etc....

thanks, guys. is there any special way that i need to put the new one in,(like calibrating the new sensor) or should i just take the old one out and put the new one in.....?

No calibration required, just watch the 'O' ring.
