Ever since i've join the forum, i keep hearing all these things about Autozone, that they're the Sh!# w/free diagnostics and yahdee yahdee yahdah... i blaze down there, the one on CAPITOL EXPRESSWAY and ask if they read CEL's... homeboy said "NOPE." i was like "you mean... not anymore." Dude just looked at me. So i bought some vinyl cleaner and that was that. My question is do they still do it? or is it just the SJ store, has the policy changed?

The state of Cali has banned "free" code reading. The dealers got toughter and went before the stae and claimed that they were losing a ton of money because no one went to them to get their codes read because "Parts stores" were doing it for free. In any other state they will do it for you for free. My buddies still go to autozone in NC and have theirs read for free. So there are alot of people here on the boards that still have their codes read for free. Just not us Cali guys.

Yup, I hate when someone on here acts like I'm the idiot and says "why don't you just go to Autozone and get them read for free!" Then I have to explain to them over and over again that CA has made that illegal.

That kinda sucks. You can buy a code reader for that much...Once I get mine, I'll let people use it free of charge, geez...

I am a manager at Autozone in UT. We read the codes, but there has been some major uproar of that. we used to be able to clear them and stuff, but now we aren't allowed...some lawsuit...whatever, but I also worked at a shop and understand it from a mechanic's point of view...most of them have spent some serious money on their machines and need to recoop that costs... ie. Snap on machines...a couple grand I'm sure. So it wouldn't surprise me if that happened in CA.
