As I understand the regular non-SVT focuses use a more-or-less same MTX-75 transmission. I saw discussions about upgrading various parts in Contour MTX-75's with Focus spec parts. Is it possible to just swap the whole unit with one from a Focus? Is that fair to assume that Focus MTX's don't develop the common problems Contour ones do?

While the guts are basically the same (barring upgraded parts that have the same form, fit, and function as the parts they replace), there are two different bellhousings. If you drive a Zetec Contour, the swap should be trouble free. If you drive a Duratec you need to put the Focus trans' guts inside a V6 bellhousing.

Not always. The zetec final drive does more bad than good if you don't have the umph to get it rolling down low and the umph to keep it rolling up top. Although if you do have the umph out of whatever motor your using it is pretty cool.

The latest Focus with the 2.3 engine uses a still different MTX-75 trans that looks like it may not have much that is interchangable with the other MTX-75 trans.

How about the Cougars? From what I read in earlier posts it's a direct swap. Do the newer V6 Cougars ('01, '02) use the upgraded mtx-75s (like the focus)?

the 01+ cougars CD4E has a different torque convertor, and uses a different flywheel (i learned the hard way)

I was asking about the manual tranny, not the auto, the CD4E is the auto, right?

I suppose the Focus tranny is cable actuated so the above
statement is true for 98+ cars only ?
