that happened to me once and it was a problem with a fuse, or a switch of some sort. was on a 91 tempo, so im not sure what the differences in that car and the 'tour are. both made by ford if that helps.
im doin a 100 on the highway... so if you do the speed limit get the f*** out of my way.

Mine did that too, on all modes EXCEPT max A/C mode. But it WOULD blow air on Max A/C mode. Opposite of your problem. But I found a bad flapper door vacuum servo actuator under the dashboard near and above the gas pedal area. You could try disconnecting the linkage for the servo and manually move the flapper door to see if it may help your air flow.
But also check the cabin filter located in the cowl under the windshield wiper shroud. Those always get clogged with leaves and pine needles (unless you live in the dessert, haha). That may explain why you have air during only the A/C mode, because A/C recirculates the air in the cabin for maximum cooling without drawing hot air from outside, while other modes draw fresh air from outside the cabin, which would go along with the condition you had previously described

One last thing... Sometimes the flapper doors inside the heater/AC box can stick in one position due to mildew sticking the flapper door gaskets one way so the selection flapper can't move to any setting other than defrost mode (in your case). When this occurs, the vacuum servo actuator in most cases, doesn't exert enough force to break the sticking door free. If this is the case, all you need to do, is find all the different actuators on the heater/AC box, and MANUALLY move them once with your hand to break them loose and insure that they can each move freely within the normal travel

Welcome onboard.
Defrost setting is default mode on our vacuum operated heater control system. If you have had any work done recently in engine compartment, you may want to check vacuum hoses at rear of engine compartment around the firewall.
p.s. You don't provide car info so I'm assuming v6.

Dude...check your fuses. The AC/fan/cruise control/turn signals are all on the same fuse. Have blown mine twice. Under dash..drop box...can't remember which to pull. Try that 1st.

That's a good and important place to start, and an easy one to check. You definitely need vacuum supply to the vacuum swithing selector valve inside, in order to move ANY of the actuators from their default positions.
