Theres a guy named moxnix(CEG name) that has a 2000 SE Sport and he has about 118K and still running the original waterpump. I have 60k on mine and no indication of problems.

I can say for sure that your water pump impeller is plastic. I had a new BAT water pump with the metal impeller installed and saved the original.
I had 45,000 miles on my 2000 V6 when I switched the pump and damper. I did not have any problems with either, but I am planning on needing my Contour for another 80,000 miles. I figured that the upgrades were cheap insurance.
I will probably install the new BAT/Ford baffled oil pan as well, and for the same reason.

There were a few posts in one thread where folks with the metal impeller pump had a leak (i.e. failure) from the pump shaft/bearing/weep hole area.
Mighta been a bad batch, over tension in the belt maybe. The thread is within the last 3 months or so.
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

And you will not get any. It will seem fine and then fail without warning, if it is going to fail.
It takes less than 5 minutes for the aluminum block V6 to overheat once the pump goes. Most don't watch their temp gauge that well...
