No, but came REAL close shallow diving off of Bahia Honda in the Florida Keys. I distrubed one that was completely covered in sand and silt. I was almost over the top of it when it split, leaving me wondering what in the hell just happened. One second I had 40 ft. of visibility and calm waters, the next ZERO vis and felt a moderate amount of turbulance. When we got visibility back, I could see that my friend's eyes were wide as saucer-plates behind his mask and he told me to surface ASAP. Come to find out I scared up a ray that must have been 8-10 ft. tip to tip and just about got speared in my chest by his tail. I'm glad I didn't see any of it, as I would have had a biological mess in my wetsuit, front and back and probably wouldn't dive without chainmail... How long have you bee surfing? I just picked it up a few years back and will be doing some in Costa Rica in about a week. I'm still a rank amateur as short boards still give me problems. I'm more of a long board wanker. The worst I've ever suffered while surfing is board rash and getting nailed in the back with my board...

wow, thats crazy, i didnt think Stingrays got that big i thought they only got to be about 3 feet, thats nuts, Ive been surfing only about 2 years, wow, it seems longer, i go out about 4x per week, and i ride a 6'1" Al Merrick.

It could have been a Manta Ray, though I have no clue; I didn't even see the thing, but from the wake the sucker left in the silt, it was BIG.
If you know any traveled surfers, mention the word "Witches Cove" to them or ask about it. The outfit I use in Costa Rica has 2-3 guys from San Diego and LA (Long Beach, I believe) that are seasonal to the area. Great place to surf as the last time I was there, it was me, my friend, our guide, 3 miles of EMPTY beach and good waves.
The Pacific side of Costa Rica is a surfer's paradise, as you don't have to fight crowds most of the time, except in Tamarindo Beach.

Never been stung by a stingray, but I have stepped on a sea cucumber while in Guam. Talk about NASTAY

while i was scuba diving in austrlia in the great barrier reef i got torn up by some nasty coral...got infected..
wasnt fun..and a shark rubbed my nuts on a night time dive..
but a sting ray is horrible i hear..
