I'm having a low rough idle on my 2.0L Contour. The Check Engine Light will sometimes come on but turn off after a few seconds. It never comes on while idling, only while driving, and most of the time it stays off. Other than the low idle the motor runs out smooth with only the temperature between the A and L in NORMAL. I installed new plugs, wires, fuel and air filters, and just had the coolant flushed. Any Help??????????

I am having a similar problem. Go to autozone and have them pull the code and then post it here. It sounds like an IAC problem. Search around and you should be able to find a lot of information. BTW welcome to CEG

Thanks!!!!!!!! Well, I got the AutoZone guy to put the code scanner on my '95 Contour (OBD 1), and had some fun trying to decipher the codes. I believe we got a 111, possibly a 117 and a couple other ones that made no sense!!! I had the key in the ON position, with the engine not running. I've also noticed that the lower idle seems to occur after the car has warmed up not so much when it is cold. Now the CEL is staying on for approx. 5 minutes then turns back off. Any Help????????????????? Could this be temperature related? It doesn't overheat, but stays steady at the L in Normal, even after flushing with new coolant. This is my first Contour, and I'm happy with the engine performance other than the idle probs......... thanx

On the 95s the 111 code is a normal sort of 'it's working with no faults which is generally recorded at the beginning of the code sequence. After a couple of 111 codes there is usually a pause and then the real error codes are output. A 117 means the coolant temperature is below normal. (?) On the 95s you can read your codes by counting the CEL light blinks by following this test routine. Have a pen and paper handy and write down the number of blinks to keep from getting confused. The temp reading at the L in Normal seems on the warm side, but I think thats common a Zetec temp.

The car is supposed to idle slightly higher while warming up. As for as the 'L' that is very common temp for a zetec dont be worried bout that
