Just wondering if anyone has any ideas what my problem is.

I am trying to sell my car so it was sitting outside my friends carwash. It had sat for about 4 days and someone called me about it and I took them for a test drive(the car ran perfectly). I parked it again after the drive and when I returned the next day, the battery was dead. I thought maybe I left something on, so I put another battery in it and the next day that one was dead. I got in the car and it started and ran fine with a fresh battery except for a few problems. The battery light is on at idle, but turns off above about 2000 RPM's. The alternator is charging, I checked that. Also the radio turns off at the same rpm. The airbag light is also flashing, although I cant remember the code. The terminals got hot on the battery when it is running as well.

When I drove it home from the car wash, to try and figure out what was wrong, at one point the tach went all the way to 8K for about 20 seconds then returned to normal. I think there is a short somewhere, but I have no idea how to start to look for it. I think I may have to swallow my pride on this one and take it to a mechanic.

Any help would be much appreciated.

TIA

It sounds like you have a short to ground somewhere. If you have a amp meter with a high enough amp rating, hook it up between the battery terminal and battery cable. Then pull and replace one fuse at a time untill the amperage drops. When you pull a fuse and the amperage drops then you have found the problem.

If your amp meter is not rated high enough it will probably blow the ampmeter fuse. The amp meter will then show zero amps with a blown fuse.

If this happens long after starting, it may well mean your regulator is bad. It comes from trying to shove too much current into the battery.

Check the charging voltage and make sure it's between 13.8 and 15. If it's over 15 you're overcharging. This kills the battery.
