It's a pretty absolute rule. If you hit the brakes, and the snows grip while the rears slide, you would be in a spin, which can be bad for your insurance rates

2 snows is only slightly (like 5%) better than 4 all-seasons. GET 4!

I saw a speck this morning, mine were on within 15 minutes.

If you put the 2 snow tires on the front you end up with oversteer. The nose of the car will go where you want it, but the back end will tend to break loose earlier than the front end. When the rear end swings out you will go into a skid quickly.

If you put the 2 snow tires on the rear wheels you will end up with understeer. The front two tires will tend to lock up or plow through corners. Once they do this your car pretty much goes in a straight line rather than corner. This will either put you into the snowbank or worse, into oncoming traffic.

The best and only soloution is to get 4 snow tires so all the dymanic forces are balanced out on the vehicle.

Even a cheap set of snow tires is far better than a good set of all seasons. Check Canadian Tires' brand of snow tires. The two versions they offer are good value for the money. Even Wal-mart offers cheap winter tires starting at $30/ea.
