Thanks a lot!

I've got a 1996 Contour GL/SPORT with the 2.0L L4 PFI 16V DOHC Engine and it has now 61000 MILES.

With just that single code, I think replacing the sensor will handle it, atleast for a while. Though if you have the time/ability/money to check other things, go ahead. I got my sensor from www.oxygensensors.com and used the loaner tool from autozone,,, I did it while the engine was hot so it was a PITA, but it doesn't take long and is one of the easier things to do on the zetec, easier than changing the oil.

Tip 2:Don't listen to this guy (ever).

Though your engine is most likely not in immediate danger, the CEL can be from very serious things and though it's usually something simple, it can be from something major or something that will soon become a major problem. Mine is on right now, I'm gonna get it fixed this week because IT IS NOT GOOD for the car.

Yeah right buddy I say a lot of good things. More than you do.

Read your damn owners manual it says you need not have your car towed it, and to service at the first oppurunity, it says it wont damage the engine.

As it being not good for the car it doesnt matter either way, come see my neijhbors cars, the thing has been one forever and hasnt run any different the day it came on.

I think I've got to count for about 50$ for the part. But how can I know if i need the "Sensor located in front manifold/exhaust pipe before catalyst" or the "Downstream sensor, after catalyst"

I've got a Basic warranty on the car from PennWarranty(http://pennwarranty.com/Frameset.htm)which covers at the 'ENGINE - Cylinder block, cylinder heads, and all internal parts. Manifolds, valve train and covers, and flywheel. Camshaft and timing drive components. Oil pump and oil pan. Cylinder head and intake manifold gaskets are covered for coolant leaks only.'
I think this problem is part of my warranty, so I could maybe use the warranty if the part or parts costs 50$ or
100$.

@ HITMANinMI The damn manual lies just at my bedside table and I read, or better I gobble it as often I can.

You answered this already: Code PO133, Upstream Heated Oxygen Sensor circuit Slow Response - Bank No. 1.

Sounds like Penn Warranty covers mostly hardware problems, but call them up and ask.

Righhhht. Like that cd4e's don't have a drain plug. And not to mix octanes. Go back to car dealer college, newbie.

I never said you have to have it towed in. Listen car dealer, I know you're just a car salesman so you don't know much about cars, but you should read some stuff on here and learn a little before you open your mouth (I may have did the same thing when I was a newbie). Also learn to spell NEIGHBOR.

The service manual says have it serviced at the FIRST opporTunity, as I was saying. I never said park your car and have it towed.

My CEL is on and sure the car runs good enough but it still needs to be fixed (this Wednesday). Hey but I guess the check engine light doesn't matter, it was put there for NO reason. And it says have it serviced at the FIRST opportunity because sometimes when the CEL is on, it can result in eventaully damaging your engine. But because your teenage neighbor's car is OK for now, that means everybody else must have the same exact thing happening to their car and they don't need to get it fixed. Everybody listen to this guy and make sure not to get your CEL taken care of because he really knows what he's talking about.

The CEL went of today, and I was a litle bit confused, has my car a self repair function? So I went to autozone again, they checked it and the mesagge PO133 still comes, it also says 'slow response'. At autozone the part costs 61$, 10$ more then at the link above, but they will lend me the socket for for replacement but not a wretch. So I think I wil get it from autozone and try to borow a wratch.
But can it be that the sensor is 'only' dirty, and after cleaning it would work again? 'cause if it would be broken it wouldn't say slow response but no response, or not?

Some faults that trigger a CEL are immediate, most oxygen sensor codes are not - with the exception of a heater circuit fault. The CEL will go on and off depending on operating conditions. It will come on more often as the O2 continues to degrade.

Even though some buildup may occur on the O2 sensor, this is not what causes failure. Oxygen sensors do not respond to cleaning.

Oxygen sensors generate electricity in the presence of oxygen due to the ionic conductivity of zirconia electrolyte at high temperatures. Chemical degridation due to the heat and chemical reactions with contaminates require eventual replacement. Contaminates like tetraethyl lead and ethylene glycol antifreeze cause rapid deteriorization.

The socket from AZ is all you need to change it, atleast on a zetec.

Wouldn't you know?I have a 98 Contour with 38,000 miles and I had the oil and the transmission fluid changed at the dealer last night.
Today I have the check engine light on.
The oil is fine (although it's seem a little high) and the tranny fluid is fine.

The dealer didn't have time for me today but they don't seem too concerned. They asked me to make sure the gas cap is on tightly.

I'll have the code checked at autozone this weekend if the light stays on.

I am tempted to disconnect the ground on the battery and wait till it comes on again.
