I'm hoping I just need to add some more friction modifier to my tranny coctail (Mobil1 ATF and Ford FM), but here goes:

When I'm running up the gears and go for my 2-3 shift, I get a grinding going INTO 3rd. It only grinds for a half-second as I push the gear shifter into 3rd, and only under quick shifts/high-RPM shifts. I can run the RPM's up to say 6k, then shift to 3rd, and as long as I pause before shifting into 3rd, it doesn't grind. So it would seem that maybe my timing is off when I'm shifting quick, but all other gears don't grind and I haven't had a problem yet with anything other than 3rd.... Do I just need to learn to shift again? Or could this be just a shortage of Friction Modifier? Or could this be something serious that I have to get looked at ($$$$ ahh!)?

TIA

I'd defiantly try the tranny cocktail first but if that doesn't do anything it might be a bad syncro. I had to have mine replaced (thank God for warranty.) wink

You might just want to try taking it easy on the tranny though. Maybe you're cutting your 2-3 shift to short.

Probably is a bad 3rd gear syncro though. Pretty expensive to fix...tranny has to be pulled. frown

Welcome to the world of the MTX75 tranny!!! I posted this same issue last week and was told by Terry Haines that it is most likely bad synchros and as the post above explains, not an easy fix!! He recommended changing the tranny fluid and adding the friction supplement. Otherwise, just shift it slowly into 3rd gear. Mine does it no matter what speed I shift it at, unless I shift it slowly. As for this friction supplement, where can I get it? Just any old ford dealer?

The syncro cones/blocker rings are worn and you are 'beating the syncro' by shifting too fast.As the cones/rings become worn they need more time to 'spin up' the gear you are going into.Normal Dextron III with Ford friction mod will help but it cant put back the worn metal...in the end its a trans out job...sorry!

omg, first the snapped spring, now this! Where oh where am I going to get the money for suspension AND transmission repairs.....

Terry, if I have anyone fix this, I'd love to have you be the man smile If I have to fix this tranny, I want to fix it for good, even if it costs a few extra bucks. Would you suggest an overhaul on this thing? I know nothing about tranny's, but if the 3rd gear synchros are worn, most of the rest of the tranny is probably worn too... ideas/suggestions?
