Would it be fair to say that 225-50's on a stock 99 SVT is a gamble? I have read lots of posts that say "ya they're great", but there are more than enough "they rub" to discount the endorsements. I know this a tired question, but it doesn't seem to have really been answered...
225-50's or 205-55????

My summer tires are 225-50 and the winters I just put on are 205-55, so I've got both. With the 225's the fender liner wore a small hole on each back side but that's no big deal. I was thinking of going back to 205-55 for the summer when the ones I have now wear out, but after putting the thinner winters on, no way. The summers just look meatier on there. Mind you, the 1/2" spacers I put on with the winters helped a lot in the looks dept.. For reference, the summers are Kumho 712's and the winters are Canadian Tire house brand made by Michelin, I believe.

I have 225/50 KDWS's on my car for almost a full week and I have had no tire rubbing, yet. I get the car back from the shop tomorrow (bad starter + front brakes) so I'll keep an eye and ear out for it.

I have potenz re950's in 225/50/16 or 225/55/16?? for over a year and only had rubbing once when the car was very loaded there were 4 big guys (200lbs each) and a chick (120lbs) + tool box in the truck. The only rubbing was when i went over a larg bump.
The next tire i get will be a 225/40 or 225/45. But then I hope to go to a 17' rim

if my car is lowered am i going to want to play it safe and go with the 205/55?, is there a serious compromise in performance between the two, or is it mostly asthetic?

Depends on the tire you're running and how much you are lowering your vehicle...different brands have different widths (measured at the contact patch as well as the sidewall). Typically, the larger the sidewall height number (50 vs. 55) the more "cushioning effect" which results in a cooresponding decrease in performance...If it were me, I'd go with a 50 series tire... just my $0.02 worth

I had 225/50's on my car back in the winter of 00-01', it was the only size they had for snow tires and I need them NOW, so thats what I went with. I had NO problems with them at all, good luck

225-50's should not rub on a 99 or 00 as they have the inner fender cutouts.
I've had my 225-50 KDW's for over a year with no rubbing issues.
I would never choose the 205/55's for the simple sake they have significantly more sidewall to flex then the stock 215/50 (dead tire size) or even the 225/50's.

Demon, I'm glad you chimed in. Even if I can totally put the rubbing issue to rest...Here's the deal, I found 4 new Eagle F1 GS-D2's (205-55) mounted and balanced for $350. A comparable set in 225-50 would cost me nearly double that. I hate the idea of compromising performance (not to mention looks), but is it worth the extra $$$?

Take the 205-55's and run ... wanna a wider stance? Talk to me and I'll sell ya 1/2" aluminum spacers for a wider stance and better looks.
