I just called to get an oil change and the lady said I should get a 30k mile service done on my car. It's got 31k. I asked her what it consisted of. She said it's like a mini-tune up. However, it's $685. What the hell? That's a bit much or am I wrong? I just have a hard time paying close to 700 bucks when there's nothing wrong with my car.

I think that the 60K service - which is virtually the same as the 30K service - is quoted to me around $285 at my Ford dealer. Now, if you add in a few filters and whatnot, I could see another $100. But $685? You should ask for a complete list of everything they do to the car.

My dealer has a detailed list of everything they are supposed to do at each scheduled mainteance interval (every 3K, 6K, 15K, and 30K) and what it costs.

That guide is published by Ford, IIRC. You should ask your dealer for the same thing.

you should register with Myford website and they will let you know what should be done to the car (at least somewhat). I dont know if this is the full list or just a partial one but you might also want to look and see if you got a maint. guide with your car it should tell you about the same.

30,000 Miles
Inspect brake system & rotate tires
Inspect complete exhaust system and heat shields
Inspect engine cooling system, hoses, and clamps
Inspect steering linkage, ball joints, suspension and driveshaft
Perform multi-point inspection
Replace air cleaner filter
Replace cabin air filter, if equipped
Replace engine oil and filter
Replace fuel filter

Here is another opinion on what maintenance should be done on a major service.

The following is from the 1996 Ford TSP (Technical Service Publication):

Quote:

30,000 MILES (48,000 Kilometers):
- Change engine oil and replace oil bypass filter.
- Replace air cleaner element (ACL element)
- Inspect engine cooling system, hoses and clamps; and check cooling strength every 15,000 miles (24,000 km) or 12 months.
- Inspect exhaust heat shield(s).
- Inspect front and rear brakes every 10,000 miles (16,000 km).
- For 2.0L engine, replace crankcase emission filter.
- Inspect front and rear brakes.
If you notice, it is mainly a glorified oil change. Not worth more than $50 if you ask me.

Call her back and tell her that I said SHE needs a mini lube-job as her gears are not meshing right. At that rate the 60K maintenance must cost.....$2,000. eek $685......yeah, sure!!!!

Thanks, you guys... I'm getting just the oil change tomorrow and am going to ask for a list of what they do for $685. At the very least, it should include a subwoofer or a disc changer. smile

This should be considered the MINIMUM maintenance. If you want your car to last a long time and always perform well, you will do much more than the minimum.

The original factory recomendation for coolant is 45,000 miles for the first change and every 30,000 after that. In my opinion, that is not soon enough unless you enjoy replacing the radiator at about 100,000 miles.

Trans service should also be done from time to time, even on a manual trans.

Cleaning injectors and throttle body will make the car more responsive. It is the maintenance service that will be the most noticeable by the driver. You wont find it in the factory maintenance chart.

Not changing the brake fluid from time to time will also likely lead to the need to replace calipers as they deteriate internally from moisture damage. Not found on the factory maintenance chart.

So if you really want to take care of the car, look beyond the minimum maintenance. It's the old story of "Pay me now, or pay me later".
