Are you taking it to someone to have done? It takes less than an hour and an 8mm socket. http://crush7.dyndns.org/personal/waterpumpreplacement.htm The metal one is good. However, the white plastic one is just as good, maybe better since there is less rotating mass.

I was recently quoted about $350.00 (U.S.) from an independent garage, using the motorcraft complete pump. They told me none were available with the metal impeller. I decided to do it myself, and spent about $100.00 in parts (pump, gasket, thermostat, pump belt, serpentine belt), and spent about 1-1/2 hours, mostly spent cleaning old gasket off mating surface. Also changed fuel filter at same time. Very little mess.

Thanks to the both of you ! I didn't know how hard it really was - I've removed the UIM B4 & my battery but wasn't sure if alot had to be removed as well to gain reach. Chris thanks for the site/instructions, I notice that ibub below replaces the serp. belt , is this better to do when replacing the water pump? Anyway already have take'n a day off to get fixed, and will keep you updated on my first pump change !

I just had my water pump fully replaced for a new Ford pump on my '98 SVT Contour EO today at Conshohocken Ford (suburb of Philadelphia) for $267, including a coolant flush. Pretty reasonable cost compared to the horriffic overcharging posted by dozens of folks on the site. Keeping the old pump to see how it's built and as an emergency backup...
One caveat-- my car just passed 50k miles and I had this done before a failure actually occurred. My gut feel is that folks are being taken advantage of when their cars are rendered inoperable by an actual failure.
As an aside, this website is a fantastic resource-- never would I have even been able to consider replacing the water pump as a preventive maintenance item if I didn't read 200+ posts from fellow owners describing WP failures b/w 40,000-100,000 miles. It sucks that the pump is a piece of ****, but armed with the information in these forums, I've hopefully short-circuited getting stranded on the side of the road with a failed pump and a blown engine.
The information on oil starvation on long right turns at high RPM's is also priceless. Again, it sucks that this is the case, but it's damn valuable to know about ahead of time!
It really shows the true power of distributed communication. Before the internet, Usenet, and the web, this kind of information exchange just wasn't possible. It's awesome when you think about life as a car owner only 6-8 years ago and not having this kind of a forum to communicate w/ so many fellow owners all around the country and even the world.

Reasonable!!! For maybe ~$80-100 of labor and $60 in parts. Plus have some one else touch my car!!! Not remotely IMO.

As I have said in other posts, my pump went out the day I bought it. I was still close to the dealer so I risked driving it back, and they fixed it for free. I'd do it myself though, if I wouldn't have been able to get the dealer to do it for free. Car shops will charge you up the a**.

Not remotely IMO.Ford pump at dealer is $150.00. Doesn't sound so unreasonable to me. Karl

more like $70. Ford sells the whole pump, of which half you don't need.
