Well, my sunroof motor all of a sudden doesn't like to work. IIRC this is a common problem. Sounds like the gears are stripped. Are they plastic? I don't have the car right now as the cats are being replaced. Whats the course of action on this?

Hey there,
Take the assembly apart. Thats what I did. But be very careful as there are parts that are wound up and can spin out leaving you screwed. Let me know and I can walk you through it. I just thought it would be easier if I did it my self and turns out it was the best idea. I think I saved money in the process. The ford dealership would have castrated me.

had the same problem with mine and i took it a part and the gears are plastic. i think if i remember right it was the driving gear that striped. i have a question if they knew thats how much it took to open and close the moon roof why. make it plastic...totally stupid i think. i dont think they have replacement parts for the motor. or do they i kinda gave up on it. spend 100.00 or so moon roof or performance parts or lookie goods.

Turn your domelight on. When you press the moonroof button the light shouldd dim. This means that there is powere going to the motor.

If the light does not dim then the motor could be on a deadspot or fuse blown. Taking a wrench and tapping the motor brought mine back to life. Got it replaced under Warranty.

Last week (2 years later)the moonroof was stuck in the up position. This is was I did in the parking lot at work (it was going to rain).

Get a small flat head screwdriver.
You will need to remove the domelight/readinglight assembly.

On the rear edge of the domelight/readlight assembly pry gently on the rear edges, the entire light fixture will pop out. Unplug it from the wire assembly.

You will see two large phillip screws that holds the roof console cover. Remove them. Slide the console towards the rear of the car to remove it.

You now have clear view of the motor assembly.

I tapped it a couple of times with a wrench then pressed the switch and nothing happened. Then I just wiggeled the entire motor assembly a couple of times and pressed the switch, and the sunroof closed.

Chris Hightower did an incredible job on his explanation one of the possible problems.
