Hi,

I have a 2L 1995 Mystique with the auto tranny. About the only thing that has been perfect has been the tranny...until now.:( It still works pretty good...just that recently we noticed that when its around 40-45 it shifts into OD to soon...and seems to bog the motor. It does shift back out and there is no slipping...ect. Right now its more of an annoyance and sometimes I just use the OD button to help it out. I was told by a former Ford mechanic to check for EEC codes....which seem to give 3 flashes...which is either a 111 or 33. There is no 33 code so its probably the 111 code. He then said a common problem with this model is the valve body in the tranny.

Has anyone else seen or heard about this issue?

Thanks!

I think it's possible that your transmission is a symptom and not a "cause".

I had a similar issue with my '96 Mystique GS auto. The car would run out of steam and bog at around 4500 rpm, then *very* lazily shift into 4th when I eased the throttle a bit. I thought it was a transmission issue but it turned out to be a combination of 2 things: a worn timing belt -> bad timing -> blocked cat.

Ouch and mucho $$! My car runs much nicer now...though I still prefer manual transmissions...and my wallet is unfortunately lighter by $1200 ($CDN) after that particular repair...a new cat, timing belt and idlers.

I haven't seen your car so can only offer this as a possibility given your car's symptoms. Best thing to do is to get a freebie check at a muffler shop like Speedy or Midas with respect to the catalytic converter. If it *is* blocked then you should also do the timing belt if *it* has never been replaced. I think a technician can inspect it w/o too much difficulty.

I needed the idler pullies replaced at the same time (apparently this is pretty standard practice) and you should think about replacing the water pump at the same time since it's pretty much exposed when you're doing the timing belt.

Of course your car may not have any of the issues I mentioned and that's why it's best to get a good diagnosis first. At least you'll have given your tech. some good leads.

Remember my advice might be worth about what you paid for it, so read carefully what other people might suggest as well. For example, if you search the archives, many people have experienced vacuum leaks, dirty mass airflow sensors, etc. If it *is* a breathing issue you need to look at both intake and exhaust.

Hi Eric,

>> the throttle a bit. I thought it was a transmission issue but it turned out to be a combination of 2 things: a worn timing belt -> bad timing -> blocked cat. <<<

Funny thing is I did consider that! Is it the motor losing power or something with the tranny. The timing belt was done at 61K (car now has 91K on it).....nothing has been done with the muffler system. It doesnt seem down on power though...I let her rip the other night and she shifted fine and had her normal power. When it does this its more so at low rpms...on back roads. Like when the speed hits 40mph then it shifts and the tach falls to about 1800rpm.

When we did the oil in the tranny it did seem to help for a week...and why the mech suggested the valve body. The car has gotten imaculate care as far as tranny oil changes.

But I will look into your suggestions!

Thanks!

My first instinct was the pre-cats (but you have a 4 cylinder) & the intake runners.

The 95s had vacuum actuated secondaries. Check the tubing for leaks. Cheap & easy.

Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

Just an idea .... Its colder outside and the tires do lose pressure . Anywhere from 5 psi. up to 10 psi Your tires could only have 20 pounds of pressure if you have not checked them in awhile . Check your tire pressure You might be surprised how low they are
