I went out a little bit ago to get some soda out of my trunk the key wuld not work? any ideas? 1996 Contour Zetec A/T I had to use the inside latch to open the trunk. Never had this problem before.

di the temp. suddenly get cold??? if so it might be the grease in the lock with all the dirt in the grease getting too hard to turn the key???? try to put some WD-40 into the lock(the WD-40 is a solvent and it will cut the grease and move some of the dirt)...

very common problem. lock needs lube. WD-40 not a good idea. get some graphite lock lube (any auto parts place), and lube it up real good. May take some wiggling of the key a few times to break it free.

Actually, I've had the reverse happen (okay, granted, it WAS on my Probe). Graphite just gummed up the works, and I had to flush out the lock with WD-40; worked since then. WD-40 doesn't last very long, though. Six of one, a half-dozen of the other. Ah, well...

wd-40 is okay for cleaning it out, but if you don't follow up with a good lock lube, you're going to have more trouble.

Try the wd-40 first then the graphite.
