OK, so my 96 SE has had the MIL on for ages. When scanned it shows P401. EGR Flow too high. DO I need a new EGR valve. My mechanic said yes, but he's not the best diagnostician (he works really cheap).

Thanks.

Do you mean the CEL has been on for ages? EGR valve is a probable suspect.

Audi refers too the check engine light as the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) as well.

Right but on CEG it MIL usually refers to a peice of equipment to bypass the O2 sensors to prevent a CEL.

I think you're referring to the MIL eliminator that guys with headers have to use. It's still Malfunction Indicator Light though ... same as CEL (check engine light).

That is correct I guess I didn't phrase it to well. I have headers but don't have to worry about this. Thank you OBDI

now that this post has clarified a CEL=MIL I will help.

Did you by any chance check the DPFE sensor?
(Gas pressure differential sensor.)
I know Ford re-engineered it and that was my problem.
I was getting ERG 401 and O2 codes as well.

Sorry, about my late reply, and the confusion caused by my Audi speak, old habits die hard. I replace the DPFE with a plastic unit already. I should have mentioned that!
