I got the official word today, the trans has given out. The 98 Ford Contour fought a valiant fight, but never seemed to recover from the bad headgasket repair over the summer. It is time to finally lay it to rest. Unless someone can come up with some last minute (cheap) resusitating advice, it is on to that final Ford repair shop in the sky......

I feel your pain!!!!!! Something very similar happened to my 1990 AWD Tempo, the fan quit working one day (simple prob) but that caused me to overheat and ultimetly cracked the head. Over six months, I had 2 heads put on, 2 radiators, all the hoses and connections, and none of it fixed the problem. We decided to put the Tempo aside and buy my Contour once the Tempo could only go 10 miles at a time without overheating. Similar to you, I also feel that my repair shop did bad quality work and I put in 1500 bucks (more than the car is worth) to fix it. You need a new transmission, I need a new motor. *sigh* sucky repair shops - there is still so much life left in my Tempo - I could have done a better job myself!

I paid my dues kiddo! I grew up in northern Maine. 400 miles north of civilization, 3 miles outside of the arctic circle (I exaggerate). I used to refer to Bangor, Maine as, "...down south where its warm...".
We had no Wal-Mart then. Now there's one only a 2 hour drive away from where I used to live. Note how I measure distance in time rather than miles. Dues paid, trust me.
Wifey is throwin' a baby shower this weekend. Might be a good time to work on the old car.
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

You don't have a set of tan leather seats you'd like to donate, do you?? Sorry about the tour, and your wallet  Sucks when you have to find a reputable repair shop after another ones error...

OK wait a minute!!!!! Are you still taking it to the same stealership that you have been to have all this work done in the first place???????
Car runs poorly, lurches, still could be a result of a bad engine. You should go to another shop if you can and see what you get. Does the car drive at all? Do you hear grinding going on? There are too many variables at this point to rule out before you bury it.
If you did take it to the same stealership, it is possible that they are doing what a lot of em do and they are trying to take you for a ride. It complicates things because you are a woman as well. Stoopid mechanics think that they can fill you up with BS just so you will buy anything. Did you tell them that their work made the car run worse and that you wanted your money back or a free fix?
This just smacks of someone trying to take advantage of you. You probably said to them something like this..."I am not sure but it may be the tranny" and they were like "yup that is the tranny alright..." I am not getting on to you for anything, I just h8 people that take advantage of other people like that....
But again....this is just supposing. It may be that your tranny is truely bad. But something just smells foul.

No, now its somewhere else. I called the last place and they were no help so I took it somewhere else. But just like you said, basically I told them it does not move and they said "must be the tranny". $2840 please.
I give up. I am having it towed home and let it sit in my driveway. I don't know where to go from here.

Sorry to hear about the outcome...Guess you have to decide if its worth it for that kind of money, it sounds like you really don't have any mechanics that can help w/ favors. A junk yard would probably only give $100 or less for the car. Ebay is always an option, listing everything wrong w/ the car you'd do better than $100 I'm sure.
