I have a 1995 Ford ContourSE.
Had the starter replace due to a grinding noise on occasion when trying to start the car.
Car is still grinding on occasion.
Now it won't start at all.
I am told the flywheel has gone and needs replace.
10 hour job. WIll cost over 1000 Dollars.
Can anyone tell me what may have cause this and is it common?
Thanks.

my flexplate (atx flywheel) has ground down teeth, and occasionally the starter would grind. it cost me $35 ish from bill jenkins for a new one. on the other ahnd, i have the engine out for a 3L swap. but yes, wither the engine needs to be pulled, or the tranny and subframe needs to be dropped to replace it

shop around though, talk to different tranny shops.

my friend got a 92 prelude, and his flywheel broke. it cost him just under $500 for it all to be fixed by a tranny shop. the same tranny shop that installed my shiftkit and sonnax pistons for $90
